The Seme Border Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has intercepted a lion cub and two Patas monkeys at Gbaji, along the Badagry–Seme expressway in Lagos State.

In a statement issued on Monday, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Isah Sulaiman, said the animals were discovered during a routine stop-and-search operation involving a blue Mazda vehicle with registration number MUS 743 HA.

According to Sulaiman, officers discovered the endangered species concealed inside the vehicle in clear violation of Nigeria’s wildlife protection laws and international conventions.

He said two suspects, Mathew Kofi, a Beninese national and Mr. Nasiru Usman Gwandu, a Nigerian, were arrested and confessed to buying the animals in Kano with the intention of transporting them to the Benin Republic.

“In our determination to demonstrate unwavering commitment to protecting our nation’s biodiversity and to uphold Nigeria’s obligations under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), operatives of the Command, on Sunday, 16 November 2025, at about 0219hrs, intercepted the blue Mazda vehicle during a stop-and-search operation at Gbaji,” Sulaiman said.

He added, “Upon inspection, the operatives discovered one lion cub and two patas monkeys being transported in the vehicle in clear violation of national and international wildlife protection laws.”

The PRO further explained that the two suspects were detained for further investigation while the cub and monkeys were handed over to Greenfingers Wildlife Initiative for proper care.

“In line with Nigeria’s status as a signatory to CITES and consistent with global standards for wildlife protection, the endangered species were immediately confiscated and brought to the Command for documentation, while the two male suspects were detained for further investigation to ascertain the level of their involvement in wildlife trafficking,” the PRO said.

“For proper care, safety and expert handling, the endangered species were formally handed over on Sunday, 16 November 2025, to the Greenfingers Wildlife Initiative. The handover was carried out by Deputy Comptroller AY Mohammed (DC Administration) on behalf of the Customs Area Controller, Seme Area Command, Comptroller Wale Adenuga.”

Sulaiman noted that the two men were taken into custody for further investigation, while the animals were confiscated in line with Nigeria’s CITES commitments and global wildlife protection standards.

He stressed that for safety, medical evaluation and proper rehabilitation, the lion cub and monkeys were handed over to Greenfingers Wildlife Initiative on Sunday, 16 November 2025.

The handover was conducted by Deputy Comptroller AY Mohammed on behalf of the Customs Area Controller, Seme Area Command, Comptroller Wale Adenuga.

Adenuga reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to enforcing all laws relating to wildlife protection, environmental conservation and border security.

He also pledged continued collaboration with relevant agencies to curb wildlife trafficking.

The Yobe State governor has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to fiscal discipline, transparency, and good governance at all levels for better development.

Buni represented by his Deputy, Hon Idi Barde Gubana, stated this while launching a two-day capacity-building workshop for local government officials, organised by the Ministry for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs in collaboration with the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) Borno/Yobe Office at the Desert Multipurpose Conference Hall, Damaturu.

The Governor said the workshop, which brought together Chairmen, Secretaries, Directors of Personnel Management, Planning Officers, Treasurers, Auditors from all 17 Local Government Areas, and key participants from relevant Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), is aimed at strengthening fiscal transparency, accountability, and ethical governance at the grassroots.

He said his administration has implemented strategic reforms, including the Yobe State Public Financial Management Law (2020), the introduction of digital revenue and payment systems, and strengthened audit compliance, all to ensure value for money in public expenditure.

Buni said the deployment of digital payment systems at both state and local government levels has improved revenue generation, enhanced financial regulations, and promoted audit compliance, enabling the successful execution of numerous development projects across the state.

The Governor said local governments play a pivotal role in achieving the state’s development goals, emphasizing that timely release of funds is critical for the swift implementation of programmes and projects at the grassroots.

He equally said the collaboration with the ICPC will not only enhance the institutional capacity of local government officials but also promote integrity, transparency, and ethical practices in public service.

The Yobe State governor, Hon. Mai Mala Buni, has announced an unprecedented expansion of inter-town and township road projects in the year 2026 across the state.

Buni made this known while presenting the 2026 budget before the Yobe State House of Assembly in Damaturu.

The governor said his administration will continue to prioritise road construction because of its direct impact on development and economic growth.

He said, “Government would sustain its efforts in road construction as a major factor for infrastructural development for efficient delivery of goods and services, boost agricultural development and woo both indigenous and foreign investors.”

Buni disclosed that township roads and drainages will be constructed across six major towns of Damaturu, Potiskum, Nguru, Gashua, Geidam and Buni Yadi, adding that work on the Damaturu Flyover will be completed in the first quarter of 2026.

“In addition, we will construct three lanes on both sides of the dual carriageway from the Pilgrims Roundabout to the Stadium Roundabout as part of the Damaturu city renewal project,” the governor announced.

The governor said in addition to the completion of the ongoing road projects, the government will equally embark on one in the 2026 budget.

“Asphalt overlay from Ngelzarma to Mashio; Reconstruction of Kaliyari-Bayamari road; Bayamari-Geidam road; Construction of Geidam-Bukarti-Dumbol road; Nangere-Kayeri road; Buni Gari-Teteba road; construction of Kumagannam-Karasuwa Garun Guna road; construction of Tashan kalgo-Dagona road; asphalt overlay from Nguru-Highway to Karasuwa Galu.

He further announced the construction of new roads and drainage projects  within some major state institutions such as the House of Assembly complex, the High Court complex, the State Secretariat and the August 27 Stadium.

“These works will not only beautify the environment but will also address flash floods and ease movement.”

Speaking on rural connectivity, Governor Buni revealed that several additional roads will be executed under the Rural Access and Agricultural Marketing Project (RAAMP).

“These include the Mashio-Alagarno, Mashio-Jajere, Buni Gari township road, Bulanguwa-Afunori, Bombori-Majakura, Machina-Dole-Karmashe, Damagum township road, Karasuwa-Garun Guna–Maimalari–Yusufari road, Bara-Njibulwa and Kukuwa-Zango roads.”

Buni also disclosed that the SOLID Project, billed to kick start soon, will execute a total of 25 kilometres of new road projects in Damaturu in addition to resurfacing and asphalt overlay of the Damaturu internal ring road.

The governor reaffirmed that the 2026 road expansion drive is part of his campaign promises geared towards connecting all parts of the state for accessibility.

“Our goal is simple, we want all 178 political wards in Yobe to be linked with tarred roads. This will improve security response, stimulate economic activity and strengthen unity across the state,” Buni reiterated.

“We have institutionalized coordination through four mechanisms, ensuring that stabilization gains are consolidated within state systems and community structures,” the governor said.

He stressed the need for stronger multi-partner coordination, enhanced private sector participation, and more flexible financing to sustain and expand RSF and SAP interventions.

Buni further reaffirmed Yobe State’s readiness to deepen collaboration with the RSF and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to advance durable solutions and long-term peace in the region.

Former Kano State governor, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has raised fresh concern over what he described as worrisome infiltration of armed bandits into Tsanyawa, Shanono, Bagwai, Gwarzo and Karaye local government areas of the State.

Kwankwaso, who spoke during the 4th Convocation Ceremony of Skyline University Nigeria, said those border communities were under severe pressure and demanded urgent action from the Federal Government.

“Kano has been secure for many years, but these recent attacks pose a serious threat. A Commander-in-Chief must rise to the responsibility of protecting lives and property,” he noted.

The 2023 presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) also condemned the reported peace accords between some Katsina communities and bandits, describing them as reckless and capable of worsening insecurity in neighbouring states.

Kwankwaso therefore urged the Federal Government to boost border patrols, reinforce deployments and prevent further escalation of attacks.

The FCT Police Command said there were no reports of attempted assassination on Lieutenant Ahmed Yerima, the naval officer who had a confrontation recently with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, over a disputed land in Abuja.

The spokesperson of the Command, SP Josephine Adeh, said in a statement on Monday, that no such incident was reported or recorded anywhere within the FCT.

Police urged the public to disregard the information as false and desist from spreading unverified claims capable of causing unnecessary panic.

“For the safety of all residents, the Command urges the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the nearest Police Division.

The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, on Sunday urged residents of Faruruwa community in Shanono Local Government Area to intensify vigilance and strengthen cooperation with security operatives to halt persistent attacks linked to invading gunmen from neighbouring Katsina State.

Emir Sanusi gave the charge when he visited Faruruwa community where bandit incursions have surged in recent months, leaving residents in distress and security agencies under pressure.

He said, “For months now, we have witnessed increased attacks in villages bordering Katsina—bandits coming in to rustle cattle, kill innocent people and kidnap men and women”.

Sanusi said his visit was aimed at consoling residents, reaffirming government commitment, and encouraging local support for ongoing military operations.

“It is our responsibility to see our people, sympathise with them, and reassure them that the state government and security agencies are doing everything possible,” he stated.

According to the monarch, the state government has deployed additional personnel, vehicles and logistics to secure vulnerable communities.

He also encouraged communities to integrate vigilante structures into the broader security framework.

“You can already see increased movement of the army and police. We also encourage you to strengthen your vigilantes to protect your villages,” he added.

The Emir also cautioned neighbouring Katsina communities against engaging in peace deals with bandits that could embolden criminals to strike Kano border villages and retreat across state lines.

In his remarks, the Chairman of Faruruwa Security Community Forum, Alhaji Yahya Bagobiri, hailed the Emir’s intervention and visit, saying the visit triggered rapid deployment of more armed soldiers across their flashpoints.

“Today we have soldiers stationed at all major entry points. This has given us confidence and allowed us to sleep with our eyes closed,” he said.

Super Eagles’ head coach, Eric Chelle, has accused players of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) of engaging in “voodoo” rituals during their dramatic penalty shootout victory over the Super Eagles in Sunday’s CAF World Cup play-off final.

Recall that the match ended 1-1 after extra time before DR Congo triumphed 4-3 on penalties, sealing their place in next March’s inter-confederation play-offs and ending Nigeria’s hopes of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Nollywood actress Regina Daniels has again accused her estranged husband, Senator Ned Nwoko, of years of abuse, manipulation, and an attempt to destroy her public image.

After harvesting (as a farmer) or purchasing (as a non farmer) your fresh catfish, put them in a container and add a reasonable amount of cooking salt and cover the container with a lid and place a heavy object on the lid to prevent the fish from getting out of the container.

Leave for about 30 minutes after which all the fish must have been dead then you can start the steps mentioned above.
CLEANING

•     clean fish, removing the gills and intestine.

•     Wash in clean water.

BRINE AND CURE

what is brine?  Basically, brine is salt and water.

Soaking the fish in brine will achieve a few things:

•    It will firm up the flesh to be less mushy.

•    It will draw out any old blood, which will improve the taste.

•    It will add some saltiness to the fish in the right amounts; this is desired.

•    It will add some additional flavoring to the fish.

•    The cure will ensure that we are protected from the deadly botulism bacteria, especially since this is a relatively low temperature cooking environment.

(Brine recipe • 1/2 gallon good clean spring water • 3/4 cup kosher salt (or plain salt, but not iodized salt)

SMOKING AND DRYING
•     Prepare smoker.  Too much smoke will cause the fish to taste bitter. Use just enough wood to maintain a steady smoke. There are various kinds of oven. We shall discuss that in another article.
