Operatives of the Delta State Police Command have arrested suspected kidnappers and armed robbers terrorising Delta, Rivers and Kogi states.

A cache of weapons, including AK-47 rifles, a pump-action gun, a Beretta pistol, and a significant quantity of ammunition were also recovered from the suspects.

Acting on intelligence report, operatives of the CP Special Assignment Team, led by ASP Julius Robinson, tracked down a suspected kidnapper, Chedeye Mohammed, in Rivers State.

During interrogation, Mohammed led the team to a bush near a trailer park in Rivers State where they recovered an AK-47 rifle loaded with 13 rounds of 7.62mm live ammunition.

The State Police Public Relations Officer, (PPRO), SP Bright Edafe, said preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect and his gang were responsible for multiple kidnappings in Ughelli, Agbarho and other parts of Delta State, using Rivers State as a hideout.

He said efforts to apprehend other gang members are ongoing.

In another major operation, officers acting on credible intelligence launched a sting operation in Anyingba Town, Kogi State, where they arrested three suspects: Zakari Mohammed (31) from Olugbujo Community, Ibrahim Mumuni (29) from Anyangba Town, and Mohammed Hamisu (25) from Anyangba Town, all in Dekina local government area (LGA).

A search of their residences led to the recovery of an AK-47 rifle and an automatic pump-action gun.

Edafe revealed that further investigations led to the arrest of another suspect, Samaila Mohammed (35) from Udo Community, Dekina LGA, who was found in possession of a Beretta pistol loaded with three rounds of live ammunition and cartridges.

All suspects remain in custody as investigations continue

In another development, on March 25, 2025, security operatives arrested Emu Lucky (35) in Olomoro Community, Isoko South LGA.

A search on his residence led to the uncovering of 82 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition.

Preliminary investigations indicated that Lucky was supplying ammunition to kidnappers in collaboration with Mohammed Bellow, a suspected criminal already in police custody.

The PPRO said Bello allegedly acted as a middleman, facilitating the sale of weapons between Lucky and various criminal groups. He said both suspects remain in custody as investigations continue.

A Northern group, Arewa Think Tank (ATT) has dismissed a petition submitted by what it called a faceless group to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corruption Practices Commission (ICPC) to investigate and prosecute the minister of defence, Muhammed Abubakar Badaru, over alleged abuse of office.

The convener of ATT, Muhammad Alhaji Yakubu, in a statement yesterday, said, “Nigerians should not introduce ethnicity in the good works that Badaru is doing in the defence ministry because if he is not doing well, President Bola Tinubu would have removed him long ago. But the president has confidence in him and his performance. So those hiding under this petition through this faceless group to pull down the minister are doing so out of sheer envy. They are envious of the ministerial position of Badaru. And we are bold to tell such unpatriotic persons that there is no vacancy in the Ministry of Defence. They should beam their poor searchlight somewhere else.

“We also want to say that the petition that Mohammed Badaru Abubakar maintains directorship in private companies, in violation of federal law prohibiting public officers from engaging in private business activities, is nothing but deliberate lies cooked up from the pit of hell.”

He said the faceless group wrote, “Shockingly, Mr Abubakar continues to file annual returns for these companies, with records as recent as last year. Most egregiously, he operates a licensed Bureau de Change (BDC) while holding a federal ministerial position, flagrantly disregarding the laws designed to prevent conflicts of interest and corruption.”

“Arewa Think Tank finds this accusation not only as a figment of imagination but a calculated attempt to incite relevant stakeholders against the performing minister of defence,” he added.

ATT demanded that the EFCC and ICPC conduct a thorough inquiry to establish the genuineness of this faceless group and ascertain their real intention to write against the minister’s asset declarations.

“We believe that a complainant can turn accuser; therefore, we wish to urge the anti-graft agencies to enforce stricter investigations of the petitioners’ backgrounds, as they may have disregarded the principles of due process expected of factual petitioners.

“We want to say categorically that the action of the faceless petitioners suggests a threat to the nation’s security; therefore, such action should be nipped in the bud without delay.

“The Ministry of Defence, a cornerstone of Nigeria’s security, cannot be ridiculed by individuals who want to rock the sailing boat in the middle of the sea. Where were these petitioners when Badaru passed all the processes to become the ministers of one of the sensitive ministries in the country? We want to believe that the petitioners are to rubbish the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu. But they will never succeed.

“We trust that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission will act decisively to ensure that these petitioners are exposed with their evil intentions to rubbish the Minister of Defence, Muhammed Abubakar Badaru,” the statement read.

The Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development has officially revoked the Offer of Provisional Allocation of Houses under the National Housing Programme (NHP) for all recipients who failed to make full and outright payment within the stipulated period of 90-days, and the additional eight weeks grace, granted.

The permanent secretary of the ministry Dr. Shuaib Muhammad Belgore, in Abuja revealed that this decision aligns with the terms and conditions outlined in Paragraph 2 of the Provisional Offer of Allocation Letter issued to beneficiaries and it reinforces the Ministry’s commitment to ensuring transparency, compliance, and efficient management of the National Housing Programme.

He emphasised that the revocation strictly applies to those who did not fulfill the payment requirements within the designated timeframe and further clarified that all beneficiaries who successfully completed their payments on or before February 28, 2025, remain unaffected by this action and advised that they should come to the Ministry to collect their Letters of Allocation and proceed to take possession of the Houses immediately.

Dr. Belgore also revealed that for ease of reference and public accountability, the full list of individuals whose Provisional Offer of Allocation has been revoked is now available on the  Ministry’s official website https://fmhud.gov.ng and will also be published in the Daily Trust, Nation and LEADERSHIP Newspapers, in the first week of April, 2025.

The permanent secretary further explained that the Housing ministry remains dedicated to providing accessible and affordable housing to Nigerians, and this measure is part of ongoing efforts to streamline the housing allocation process for greater efficiency and fairness.

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has reported a substantial improvement in its net foreign exchange reserve (NFER) position as of the end of 2024, reflecting a substantial improvement in the country’s external liquidity, reduced short-term obligations, and renewed investor confidence.

According to the CBN, NFER stood at $23.11 billion, the highest level in over three years, a marked increase from $3.99 billion at year-end 2023, $8.19 billion in 2022, and $14.59 billion in 2021.

NFER, which adjusts gross reserves to account for near-term liabilities such as FX swaps and forward contracts, is widely regarded as a more accurate indicator of the foreign exchange buffers available to meet immediate external obligations.

Gross external reserves also increased to $40.19 billion, compared to $33.22 billion at the close of 2023, the CBN said in a statement yesterday.

The increase in reserves reflects a combination of strategic measures undertaken by the CBN, including a deliberate and substantial reduction in short-term foreign exchange liabilities – notably swaps and forward obligations.

The strengthening was also spurred by policy actions to rebuild confidence in the FX market and increase reserve buffers, along with recent improved foreign exchange inflows – particularly from non-oil sources.

The result is a stronger and more transparent reserves position that better equips Nigeria to withstand external shocks. The expansion occurred even as the CBN continued to reduce short-term liabilities, thereby improving the overall quality of the reserve position.

“This improvement in our net reserves is not accidental; it is the outcome of deliberate policy choices aimed at rebuilding confidence, reducing vulnerabilities, and laying the foundation for long-term stability,” Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Olayemi Cardoso, commented. “We remain focused on sustaining this progress through transparency, discipline, and market-driven reforms.”

Reserves have continued to strengthen in 2025. While the first quarter figures reflected some seasonal and transitional adjustments, including significant interest payments on foreign-denominated debt, underlying fundamentals remain intact, and reserves are expected to continue improving over the second quarter of this year.

“Going forward, the CBN anticipates a steady uptick in reserves, underpinned by improved oil production levels, and a more supporting export growth environment expected to boost non-oil FX earnings and diversify external inflows.

“The CBN remains committed to prudent reserve management, transparent reporting, and macroeconomic policies that support a stable exchange rate, attract investment, and build long-term resilience,” the apex bank stated.

Operatives of the Zone 2 Police Command, Onikan, Lagos, have detained a syndicate for allegedly trafficking girls from Nigeria to Mauritania for prostitution and sexual exploitation.

The Zonal Public Relations Officer (ZPRO), CSP Umma Ayuba, confirmed this in a statement on Tuesday in Lagos.

She said the syndicate was apprehended on March 22 at the Command in the Meiran area of the state.

“Operatives of the Zonal Intelligence Response Squad (ZIRS), led by SP Francis Kpoughul, stormed their base where two suspects were apprehended,” Ayuba said.

The ZPRO stated that the suspects confessed to the crime.

“The first suspect said she was introduced to a woman based in Mauritania by another woman, who has been prosecuted for the same offence and is currently serving a jail term.

“She said the woman in Mauritania contracted her to recruit young girls below the age of 22 to be used as sex workers there.

“She added that she received ₦50,000 as commission for each girl sent to Mauritania.

“She confessed that, among the girls she recruited, was her 19-year-old daughter. She also admitted to receiving over ₦500,000 from the woman in Mauritania,” Ayuba said.

The ZPRO stated that her accomplice, the second suspect, admitted being contracted by the first suspect to recruit girls as domestic staff in Mauritania.

“She said that, upon further questioning, she discovered the girls were to be used as sex workers and decided to withdraw from the business.

“She added that the only girl she sent to the first suspect was rejected due to her age and body size. That was when she realised something was wrong,” Ayuba said.

According to the ZPRO, the investigation is ongoing, and the suspects will be charged to court upon completion. (NAN)

According to him, PINL’s closer engagement with local communities has fostered trust, yielding better security outcomes. He emphasised the importance of companies immersing themselves in the local culture and actively listening to the people to ensure lasting partnerships.

“They have demonstrated differently from the other companies, more especially IOCs and multinationals. They are closer to the people and that is the more reason they are getting positive results. That means they are feeling the impact of the people in the region better than those that are very far from us. So, I give credit to them”, he said.

Similarly, Jonathan Lokpobiri, the president of the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) worldwide, commended PINL for integrating community stakeholders into its operations and described the company’s approach as a “wise decision” that acknowledges the importance of grassroots participation in resolving security challenges.

“For PINL to be part of the solution to the issues of insecurity in the Niger Delta, it is not only timely but a wise decision. For me, I give them credit for that. There is no company without people, especially in the context in which they operate.

“Their activities are community based, so, the stakeholders from communities must become their automatic partners. The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, has called on Nigerians to support and encourage the military in its commitment to securing the country.

The COAS averred that the relative peace experienced in parts of the country, with emphasis on the Niger Delta region, is attributable to the doggedness of the troops, who put their lives on the line to protect the citizens and national assets from external forces.

Oluyede, who was represented by the Commander, Nigerian Army Training and Doctrine Command, Major General Kevin Aligbe, stated that the festive period called for bonding as an indivisible nation.

He said, “This year’s Ramadan, which coincided with the Lenten season, served as a valuable reminder of the importance of unity, mutual respect and peaceful co-existence as a nation.

“Eid-el-Fitr is not just a time of celebration, but a call to strengthen our bonds as one people, regardless of ethnicity, religion, or background.

“Our nation’s stability and security depends on our collective resolve, cooperation and unyielding spirit. As we commemorate this festive occasion, pray for Nigeria’s continued progress, unity and prosperity.”

The COAS encouraged the troops, saying, “Your commitment and dedication to duty during this holy period deserves the highest recognition. While many are celebrating with their families, our troops remained at their duty posts across the various theatres of operations to safeguard our beloved nation with unwavering resolve.”

In his welcome address, the General Officer Commanding (GOC), 6 Division, Nigerian Army, Major General Emmanuel Emekah, commended the troops for their commitment to securing oil installations in the Niger Delta region.

Emekah said, “The luncheon is organised to appreciate the sacrifices of our troops. This is in line with the COAS Command Philosophy, which has sound administration, anchored on welfare as one of its main pillars.

“Today, we are essentially here to say thank you for the good job you are doing for this great nation. Let me also add that it is on record that our operational activities have yielded the desired effect as evident in the surge in oil production quota for a relatively consistent period.”

The GOC, who was represented by the Commander, 6 Division Garrison/Commander Sector 3 Operation Delta Safe, Brigadier General Sani Ahmed, urged the troops to sustain the tempo for the good of the nation.

In his goodwill message, Rivers State Sole Administrator, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas, noted the Nigerian Army as a globally respected force, saying that it has continued to evolve in warfare dynamics and operational preparedness despite the myriads of economic and security challenges bedeviling the country.

The Nigeria Police Force has warned against unauthorised camping and hiking in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), noting that such actions have security implications.

The police said the advice comes in light of recent security concerns and the need to ensure the safety of all participants.

While issuing the warning in Abuja, the FCT commissioner of police, CP Ajao Adewale said that the police must be informed before any camping or hiking activity takes place.

He emphasised that failure to do so poses significant security risks, as remote or unsecured locations could be vulnerable to criminal activities.

“The FCT Police command hereby advises members of the public, especially youth groups, organisations, and hiking enthusiasts, to take necessary precautions before embarking on camping and hiking activities. This advice comes in light of recent security concerns and the need to ensure the safety of all participants,” he said.

The command further stressed that the importance of notifying the police and liaising with them is to obtain guidance on safe routes and adequate security arrangements.

Meanwhile, the FCT police spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh said the FCT Police remain committed to working with the public to minimise risks by offering expert advice on intended locations and ensuring proper monitoring and protection where necessary.

“Furthermore, the Command urges organisers to ensure that all participants are accounted for throughout the duration of such outdoor activities. It is essential to verify that everyone returns safely and in the same order to avoid cases of missing persons or unforeseen incidents. Ten years after willingly conceding victory to the immediate past President Muhammadu Buhari, the executive secretary of the International Supreme Council for Peace in Africa (ISCP), Amb. Simeon Uwah has commended former President Goodluck Jonathan for such a patriotic decision.

Describing such action as a political masterstroke exemplification of a statesman, the African peace envoy noted that if decided otherwise, the country could have been thrown into turmoil, with the potential to reverse Nigeria’s fortunes several years backwards, given the prevailing tension in the polity.

He recalled that the victory concession midway, as votes were still being counted in the 2015 presidential election, would continue to remain a model for leadership in Africa’s nascent democracy, as it averted the avoidable bloodshed of many Nigerians.

Speaking with journalists in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, in commemoration of Mr Jonathan’s decision a decade ago, Uwah stated that his decision to exit power would continue to be a case study for African sit-tight dictators who are in the habit of holding on to power in the face of growing discontent amongst followers

He recalled that “exactly 10 years ago today, on March 31, 2015, former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan made history by accepting defeat and conceding victory to then President Muhammadu Buhari, after a fiercely contested presidential election.”

“In an era where political leaders across Africa often resort to violence, electoral disputes, or unconstitutional manoeuvres to cling to power, Jonathan’s concession remains one of the most defining moments of African democratic maturity. Indeed, then, Nigeria’s democracy was draped in bright colours,” he noted.

Uwah remembered Jonathan’s decisive phone call to congratulate Buhari, adding that that singular act, which has echoed and reverberated across the world, has earned him accolades and several titles in the international community.

“His now-famous telephone call to Buhari was not just a gracious acceptance of electoral results but a deliberate commitment to peace, democracy, and national stability.

“That singular act prevented post-election violence, saved lives, and reinforced Nigeria’s democratic credentials on the global stage,” Uwah stressed, adding that “this will continue to serve as a model for Africa as the continent is confronted with a political crisis.”

“As Africa grapples with military coups, disputed elections, reversal of democratic gains, and authoritarian entrenchment, Jonathan’s approach remains a critical blueprint for democracy and governance reforms.

“With increasing political instability across the continent – from Guinea to Sudan, Gabon to Burkina Faso – institutionalising patriotic and democratic leadership is no longer an option; it is a necessity. Indeed, this direction should dictate the future for governance in Africa, or something worse may befall the continent,” he maintained.

According to the envoy, Jonathan’s peaceful concession should be taught as a case study in governance and training for African leaders.

Therefore, Uwah canvassed for the African Union (AU) and the Economic Community for West African States (ECOWAS) to institute peaceful handover and leadership transition as democratic standards to save the continent’s democracy from total collapse.

He advocated that “a political transition should be collaborative instead of adversarial while future leaders must embrace bipartisanship and national reconciliation as part of governance.”

Ten years later, he recalled Jonathan’s words, “My ambition is not worth the blood of any Nigerian,” still etched on the minds of Nigerians, and charged that “it is time for African leaders to adopt this mindset, not only in words but in action.”

•    It will firm up the flesh to be less mushy.

•    It will draw out any old blood, which will improve the taste.

•    It will add some saltiness to the fish in the right amounts; this is desired.

•    It will add some additional flavoring to the fish.

•    The cure will ensure that we are protected from the deadly botulism bacteria, especially since this is a relatively low temperature cooking environment.

(Brine recipe • 1/2 gallon good clean spring water • 3/4 cup kosher salt (or plain salt, but not iodized salt)
