VP Shettima spoke on Tuesday during a forum titled “Roadmap to Co-create Investment Opportunities for Africa’s Frontier Markets,” at the ongoing annual meeting of the 2025 World Economic Forum ( WEF) in Davos, Switzerland.

At the session which was co-chaired by Mirek Dusek, Managing Director of World Economic Forum, and chaired by Marie-Laure Akin Olugbade, Senior Vice President, African Development Bank (AFDB) group, discussions focused on the Humanitarian and Resilience Investing Roadmap for Africa.

He told the forum that the tales they hear about the country and the African continent as a whole are really not that of doom and gloom as being painted by doomsday proponents.

The Vice President in a statement by his spokesman, Stanley Nkwocha noted that Nigeria is poised to invade the global business platform with modernisation and robust investments, assuring that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, a seasoned chartered accountant, is working to make the nation an investment destination in Africa.

“For 20 years, I have been in the Nigerian banking industry. I was a general manager in Nigeria’s largest bank, Zenith Bank. I grew up in that ecosystem. The President himself is a seasoned chartered accountant. So, I believe that Nigeria is ready for business, Nigeria is ready to embrace the path of modernization with very robust investment,” he declared.

Acknowledging however that the nation may still have certain deficits, VP Shettima pointed out that Nigeria is looking up to the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) to address the challenges.

He stated: “We are having a huge deficit but we are looking forward to the AfCFTA and that involves investing in infrastructure for instance the coastal highway from Calabar to Lagos is the largest single investment in Africa. We are building corridors to the North.

“We have the West African gas pipeline. We are thinking ahead of time akin to the Belt and Road Initiative. We are partnering with 14 African countries to invest in gas infrastructure down to Morocco.”

Senator Shettima insisted that Africa is not all about tales of doom and gloom, maintaining that the continent has woken up from its slumber.

Likening Napoleon Bonaparte’s opinion about China to the case of Africa, the VP said, “So, Your Excellencies, ladies and gentlemen, the stories you hear about Africa are not that of doom and gloom. From DRC to Somalia, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Ghana, and Cote d’Ivoire, Africa is waking up from its slumber.

“I remember what Napoleon Bonaparte said about China, he said “China is a sleeping giant but when she wakes up, she will rattle the world”. So, Africa has woken up and we will take our rightful place in the comity of nations because as I said earlier, the trajectory of global growth is facing Africa. We are the youngest continent.”

Also drawing a leaf from the late Nigerian head of state, Gen. Murtala Mohammed, VP Shettima said Africa has come of age and can no longer be treated like an adolescent.

“I want to quote Murtala Mohammed – a Nigerian military leader at an extraordinary summit of the OAU, about 50 years ago. He said “Africa has come of age, it is no longer under the orbit of any extra-continental power, and it shall no longer take orders from any country, however powerful,” he concluded.

Meanwhile, in a show of African leadership collaboration at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Nigeria’s Vice President, Senator Shettima, on Tuesday joined South African President, Cyril Ramaphosa, as special guest of honor at a high-level briefing, following his earlier participation in the Africa Investment Forum.

Similarly, Vice President Kashim Shettima and the President of Botswana, Duma Boko, on Tuesday held a bilateral meeting where areas of mutual interest between both countries were discussed.

A coalition of 18 States in the United States has filed a lawsuit against President Donald Trump, seeking to block his controversial executive order that denies United States citizenship to children born on American soil to undocumented immigrants.

The legal challenge, filed Tuesday in Federal District Court in Massachusetts, marked the first major battle over Trump’s immigration policies in his second term.

The lawsuit, led by New Jersey Attorney General Matthew J. Platkin, alongside attorneys general from California and Massachusetts, argued that the order was an unconstitutional overreach of executive power.

“Presidents are powerful, but he is not a king. He cannot rewrite the Constitution with a stroke of the pen,” Platkin stated, calling Trump’s attempt to limit birthright citizenship “extraordinary and extreme.”

The legal action was also backed by the cities of San Francisco and Washington, D.C., reinforcing broad opposition to the administration’s move.

LEADERSHIP reports that on Monday, just hours into his second term, Trump signed the executive order declaring that children born in the U.S. to undocumented immigrants would no longer be recognised as citizens. The directive also extended to certain children born to legal but temporary residents, such as foreign students or tourists.

Trump’s order argued that these children were not “subject to the jurisdiction” of the United States and, therefore, do not qualify for citizenship under the 14th Amendment—a stance that directly contradicts over a century of legal interpretation.

For more than 100 years, courts and past administrations have consistently upheld birthright citizenship, affirming that the 14th Amendment guarantees citizenship to all children born on U.S. soil, with the sole exception being children of accredited foreign diplomats.

Despite the administration’s bold claims, legal scholars predicted a tough road ahead for Trump’s order.

“If that’s true of student loans or COVID-19 rules or whatever, you’d think it would be true of citizenship as well,” said Gerard Magliocca, a professor at the Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law, referring to recent Supreme Court decisions that blocked executive actions on major political issues without congressional approval.

He added, “The states are right, and the courts are probably going to agree with them.”

While most legal experts believed the courts will reject Trump’s order, some conservative judges have signaled support for his interpretation of the 14th Amendment.

Judge James C. Ho of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, a Trump appointee, has previously compared undocumented immigrants to an “invading army”—a comparison echoed by Texas state attorneys and Trump himself, who has described illegal border crossings as an “ongoing invasion.”

However, the Fifth Circuit does not oversee cases from Massachusetts, where the lawsuit was filed, making it unlikely that the administration’s arguments will gain immediate traction in this legal battle.

The Lagos State Police Command has filed 11-count charge against a 43-year-old Chinese national, Su Donghai alongside two Nigerians, Stanley Okafor and Ogunade Oluwaseun at the Federal High Court in Lagos for alleged conspiracy, forgery, fraud to the tune of N1 billion and money laundering.

The charge against the foreigner and the Nigerians, which has been assigned to Justice Akintayo Aluko, also has listed as co-defendants two firms, Wnw Energy Technical Development Limited and Haoti International Limited.

In the 11-count amended charge marked FHC/L/695c/2024, the police, through the office of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (Force CID), alleged that the defendants and others at-large, conspired among themselves to commit the alleged offences between January 2020 and April 2024.

The police also claimed that the defendants fraudulently obtained the sum of N1 billion belonging to CNOTS Energy Services Limited, represented by one Femi Folayan.

Also, the defendants were accused of committing the fraud by forging 89 invoices, intending to fraudulently defraud CNOTS Energy Services Energy Limited.

Specifically, the first defendant, Okafor, was accused of falsely deposing to an affidavit on Oath on February 13, 2024 at the Lagos State High Court Registry, Lagos, wherein he attached 29 invoice receipts of WNW Energy Technical Development Company Limited.

On February 20, 2020, in Lagos, Nigeria, he was also alleged to have falsely presented himself as the Managing Director of CNOTS Energy Technical Development.

For his part, the second defendant, Ogunade, was alleged to have, between 2021 and 2023 in Lagos, while acting as CNOTS Energy Services Nigeria Limited’s Chief Financial Officer, deliberately manipulated the firm’s accounting records, inserting fictitious figures in CNOTS accounting record without any corresponding piece of invoices to validate such entries.

The third defendant, Su Donghai, was also alleged to have, between January 2020 and April 2024, transferred into a bank account number 2065454879 UBA Plc of one Alikali Vivian and retained the sum of N1 billion, belonging to CNOTS Energy Services Limited.

The police alleged that the offences contravened sections 8, 1(3) and 7(2)(b) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act, 2006.

The prosecution also maintained that the offences are contrary to, and punishable under sections 20(b) of the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022 Act No. 14. And sections 1(1}(c) of the Miscellaneous Offences Act, CAP. M17 LFN 2004.

The police further stated that the defendants’ alleged illegal actions contravened Sections 390(9), 117, and 484 of the Criminal Code Act, LFN 2004.

However, the scheduled arraignment of all the defendants on Monday was stalled due to the absence of two of the defendants and the prosecutor.

Based on the development, Justice Aluko fixed February 25 for their arraignment.

In a joint letter to the director-general of NiMET, Prof. Charles Anosike, the National Union Of Air Transport Employees (NUATE); Amalgamated Union Of Public Corporations; Civil Service Technical And Recreational Services Employees (AUPCCSTRSE), and Association Of Nigeria Aviation Professionals (ANAP), alleged that the management of NiMET has refused to comply with ministerial directive for the review of Conditions of Service of its workers.

The unions also accused the NiMet management of non-implementation of the reviewed scheme of service of the agency since 2019.

The letter titled, ‘RE: Failure To Respond To Lawful And Reasonable Demands – 14 Days ultimatum,’ the unions said the workers in the agency do not deserve the sufferings that the actions and inactions of the NiMET leadership has continued to mete out to them.

“We are highly concerned that your Management has inexplicably refused all entreaties from our Unions to address the extremely adverse circumstances of the workers of NiMet. Despite being evidently aware of the clear backward state of NiMet’s staff welfare status in the aviation industry, your Management remains unmoved and lethargic in addressing this obvious malady.

“Our unions have severally, individually and jointly, sought to call your attention to these issues, but, these efforts, including ultimatum, have been totally rebuffed, or ignored completely by you. This sad narrative, you must admit, stands your Management in very poor state in industrial relations administration.

“Our Unions stand on good grounds to refuse to continue to be so treated, more importantly, the workers of the Agency do not deserve the suffering that the actions and inaction of your Management continue to mete out to them,” they stated.

LEADERSHIP reports that the bone of contention includes non-implementation of new minimum wage; non-payment of nine-month arrears of consequential adjustment of the 2019 Minimum Wage Act; refusal to comply with ministerial directive for the review of Conditions of Service, and non-implementation of the reviewed scheme of service of the Agency since 2019.

Others included, “Non-payment of 40% peculiar allowance; non-payment of. 25-35% wage award; non-payment of Hardship Allowance; failure to aid the process of transition from CONMETSS; refusal to meet with our Union over these issues, and other states issues.

“In the light of the foregoing, we wish to inform you that the Unions as named above shall be moved to commence industrial action against the Agency after fourteen (14) days from date if the stated issues are not completely ameliorated. Therefore, all workers of NiMet by copy of this letter are hereby directed to withdraw all services at the Agency with effect from 6am on Tuesday 4th of February, 2025 unless otherwise directed.”

Tragedy befell family members as well as the management of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Idi-Aba, Abeokuta, Ogun State capital on Monday, following the death of the Acting Head of the Audit Department at the hospital, Oluwaseun Adeniyi who committed suicide by jumping into a well.

Adeniyi took his life shortly after eating dinner at his residence located at the Obantoko area of Abeokuta metropolis of Odeda Local Government Area of the state.

While security operatives and the hospital management are still battling to unravel the rationale behind his action, LEADERSHIP however gathered that Adeniyi, who assumed the position of Acting Head of the Audit Department of FMC two months ago, neither showed any sign of distress for anyone to have suspected such act.

While the deceased was rumoured to have had history of a mental disorder, FMC’s Public Relations Officer (PRO), Segun Orisajo, who spoke with LEADERSHIP over the tragic incident said such suspicion could not be ascertained as Adeniyi did not display such tendency throughout the period of his working with the hospital.

Meanwhile, our Correspondent reliably gathered that one of the deceased’s children was set to marry in about a month before the tragic incident occurred.

His body has been recovered from the well and has since been deposited at a morgue.

Orisajo however, expressed the hospital management’s deep sorrow over Adeniyi’s sudden death, stressing that “It was an unfortunate incident; the management feels saddened about this development”.

Describing the late Adeniyi as “a hardworking and loyal staff member whose sudden death came as a shock to everyone at the hospital”, Orisajo maintained that the unfortunate incident caught the entire management off guard, saying, “It is quite an irreparable loss” .

“The management extends its heartfelt condolences to the department, as well as to the immediate and extended family members of the deceased,” Orisajo added.

Meanwhile, all efforts to get the spokesperson of Ogun State Police Command, Omolola Odutola to comment on the matter proved abortive, as she would not respond to message sent to her Whatsapp line.

The Minister of Communications, Innovations, and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani has attributed the recent increase in tariffs by mobile network operators (MNOs) to the global inflation and rising cost of operation.

Tijani said this while briefing journalists after a closed-door budget defence session with the National Assembly’s Joint Committee on Information, Communication and Technology on Tuesday in Abuja.

He noted that telcos have struggled with high operation cost for several years in addition to global inflationary pressures.

The minister stated that the government was committed to ensuring the sustainability of telecommunication sector and protection of Nigerians’ interest.

“The hike in price is based on inflation globally. This is a sector that has not increased prices for a long time, what the government has been doing is managing the situation. They have been crying out for a long time that they are struggling with the cost of diesel. This is not a problem that is unique to Nigerians.

“We will ensure that MNOs can continue to deliver the best quality services to the people,” adding that “the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) is doing a lot of tracking now to ensure that the quality of the services that people will get is of good quality.”

In his remarks, the Committee’s co-chairman, Senator Shuaib Salisu noted the contribution of the communication sector to the economic growth of the nation.

Salisu emphasised the need to review the 2025 proposed budget of the ministry to enable it to deliver its mandate effectively and efficiently.

Consequently, the panel adopted a motion requesting the committees on Appropriation to consider upward review of the ministry’s 2025 budget.

Communities of Libata town in Ngaski Local Government Area of Kebbi State have commended Three Crown Mines Limited (a licensed mining company operating in the area) for executing developmental projects as part of its Corporate Social Responsibilities (CSR) and in fulfillment of the Community Development Agreement (CDA) signed between the host communities and the company.

The communities gave the commendation when a team of journalists paid a visit to the mining site of Three Crown Mines on Tuesday, in Libata, Kebbi State.

Libata community of Ngaski Local Government Area of Kebbi State is blessed with solid mineral deposits including lithium, a globally sought after mineral used in the production of rechargeable batteries for mobile phones, laptops, digital cameras and electric vehicles. Lithium is also used in some non-rechargeable batteries for things like heart pacemakers, toys and clocks.

After obtaining all the necessary licenses from the Federal, State and Local Government Council, Three Crown Mines also signed a Community Development Agreement with the host communities after which it embarked on mining operations while fulfilling its promises.

Residents of the community who spoke to journalist during the visit confirmed that Three Crown Mines Limited is fulfilling the Community Development Agreement it signed with the community, stating that the community is excited about noteworthy projects being executed by Three Crown Mines toward providing healthcare infrastructure, educational facilities, and other public infrastructures for Libata community.

To support efforts of Kebbi state government in the area of security, the company donated a brand new Toyota Sienna vehicle to the vigilante of Libata.

Discussing details, a resident stated: In order to ease movement, Three Crown Mines is currently constructing a thirteen (13) kilometer feeder road linking Libata community to Mokwa town of Niger State and other neighboring towns, adding that the mining company has also commenced the construction of two health centers with a combined capacity of 48 beds, for the host community of Libata valued at 120 million Naira each, totaling 240 million Naira for the two health centre projects.

Discussing the commitment of Three Crown Mines Limited to the educational advancement of the people of Libata Community, residents said the company is fulfilling the agreement it signed, saying that it is financing the education of fifty indigenes of Libata who are studying in various universities across the country with an upkeep facility of two hundred and fifty thousand Naira per beneficiary.

Discussing support rendered to the host community in the area of religious growth and development, a resident stated: Libata is a community that believes in Almighty Allah. Three Crown Mines has been committed to the religious growth and development of the people of Libata, and we are very happy about this, adding that it the company recently sponsored 45 people to Saudi Arabia to perform the Hajj pilgrimage at a total cost of 400 million Naira.

The Chairman, Land Owners Association, Libata, Mr. Rilwanu Yahaya Kwanga praised the company for distinguishing itself by fulfilling its part of the agreement it had with landowners, saying: One of the benefits we derive from Three Crown Mines is that they started by compensating the landowners, then the company signed Community Development Agreements that aimed to address the problems of the community. One of the challenges is the need for healthcare and its infrastructure. We thank God Almighty because Three Crown Mines is already solving these problems.

While saying that about 150 indigenes of Libata Community are currently in the employ of Three Crown Mines Limited, Kwanga added the employees are on monthly salary of one hundred thousand Naira each, stating that beneficiaries of this large-heartedness include some disabled indigenes of the host community.

Kwanga stated: The point I want to make is that Three Crown Mines is not the only company operating in Kebbi State, but we feel their love for the people of Libata community, adding that the company recently paid a one year electricity bill of the entre community in generous exercise of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).

The Public Relations Officer, National Orientation Agency, Mr. Yusuf Umar, who is a respected member of Libata Community, reinforced Mr. Kwangas commendation of the company, saying: Three Crown Mines Limited has empowered the youth of Libata Community, the company pays salaries monthly and promptly, and is very concerned about our religious development. They support our imams and spiritual leaders and it has helped to instill religious injunctions and maintain peace and commitment to God in the community.

Umar pointed out that some mining companies in Nigeria are as successful as Three Crown Mines, but may not be fulfilling Community Development Agreements and may not be so committed to the educational and health wellbeing of host communities. He therefore explained that Three Crown Mines is a shining example for miners, not only in Nigeria, but in the mining sector around the world.

The company is humane, Umar said, and disclosed that within a short period of its operating in Libata, it executed projects that proved that God remembers Libata.

Three Crown Mines began to identify and address the problems of schools that have been in existence prior to its operating in Libata, Umar said, adding that the company immediately provided First Aid Boxes to primary schools as a commitment to the health of pupils.

On his part, the Village Head of Libata, Usman Garba Libata stated that Libata has witnessed tremendous development since Three Crown Mines commenced mining activities in the community.

Some commuter of the 13 kilometer feeder road who spoke to journalists also expressed appreciation to Three Crown Mines for easing their daily transportation on the road. A driver, who spoke in Hausa, said: It is obvious that the company has done well to provide this road. Travelling on this road was very frustrating until Three Crown Mines fulfilled its promise, so we are happy that Three Crown Mines is making life easy for us.

In the sideline, the Site Manager, Three Crown Mining company, Engr. Danjuma Arzika commended the effort of the Federal Government to ensure that Nigerians enjoy the fruits of the countrys mineral resources, saying: The Federal Government’s ongoing reforms in the solid mineral sector under the leadership of Dr. Dele Alake, Minister of Solid Minerals Development is commendable,” adding that the ability of the Federal Government to ensure value addition to the mineral resources of Nigeria is a milestone that will lead to the realization of the potential of the mining sector to rejuvenate the economy.

He commended Dr. Nasir Idris led government of Kebbi State, saying: We are grateful to the government of Kebbi State for providing a safe and enabling environment for licensed mining operators, adding that in addition to overcoming insecurity in Kebbi State, the State Government put in place strategies that led to sustaining the development.

Arzika explained that the ability of the Kebbi state government to address the challenge of illegal mining has led to productive mining operations in the state, adding that the ongoing peaceful mineral exploration in the state is win-win situation for the people, the government and the company.

Arzika assured that the company will ensure that the people of the host community of Libata enjoy the dividends of their mineral rich communities.

He reiterated that the current dispensation of development was made possible by the determined effort of the governor, Comrade Dr. Nasir Idris who exercised the political will needed to put an end to illegal mining in Kebbi State, a step he said led to the blocking of revenue losses in the interest of developing Kebbi State

Three Crown Mines is a lawfully operating mining company, he said, adding that it will continue to operate in line with the law.

We will continue to responsibly explore mineral resources in Libata Community. We will ensure that we give back to the community by employing from among the people of the host community as well as paying them as and when due, the manager assured.

Arzika explained that as a corporate organization, Three Crown Mines Limited believes in the development of the girl child and womenfolk, assuring that the company will sustain its commitment to the wellbeing of women and children. He said in line with this, Three Crown Mines donated the sum of ten million Naira to women group in Libata.

Lagos Freedom Fest 2024 is a live music and cultural event organized to celebrate Nigeria's independence and diversity. The event is hosted by Tenstrings Music Institute in collaboration with Freedom Park Lagos.
