A former speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has dragged the Assembly and the new speaker, Mojisola Meranda, before the Lagos State High Court in Ikeja, challenging the legality of his sack.

Obasa, in the suit which is yet to be assigned to a judge as at the time of this report, is urging the court to declare that his colleagues in the House acted unlawfully by removing him while the Assembly was on recess.

In the application dated February 12, 2025, and filed by his lawyer, Chief Afolabi Fashanu (SAN), the plaintiff claimed that he was removed from his position on January 13, 2025, by 36 lawmakers while he was out of the country.

The embattled lawmaker is seeking an order of the court fixing a date for the accelerated hearing of the case and to shorten the time allowed for the defendants to respond with counter-affidavits or written addresses to seven days post-hearing.

He also asked the court to order that the time for the plaintiff to file their replies on points of law be limited to three days.

Obasa’s application is based on nine grounds, focusing on the interpretation of various sections of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), and the Rules and Standing Orders of the Lagos State House of Assembly.

The plaintiff challenged the constitutionality of the Lagos State House of Assembly’s sitting and proceedings during recess without the speaker convening the House or delegating authority to someone else to do so.

“Public interest necessitates that this case be heard and resolved quickly to avoid disruption of legislative activities in the state,” he noted.

Obasa maintained that the court must urgently determine the legality behind the Assembly’s current leadership because it violates the applicable laws and rules.

He further asserts that the court holds inherent powers to grant expedited hearings and time limitations.

No date has been fixed for the hearing of the matter.

Muslim Public Affairs Centre (MPAC) has expressed concern over the recent allegations by a US congressman, Scott Perry, that the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has been funding terrorist organisations, including Boko Haram.

MPAC’s executive chairman, Disu Kamor, stated that these allegations were extremely disturbing, considering Boko Haram’s horrific track record of killing thousands of innocent Nigerians, mostly Muslims in the north, over the last 20 years.

According to the group, the allegation extends to the sponsoring of the kidnapping of the Chibok Girls, one of the most heinous crimes committed by Boko Haram.

“The thought that a foreign agency may have played a role in the abduction of these innocent girls is unbearable and warrants immediate attention.

“These allegations also bring to light the gross injustice perpetrated against Nigerians who have been wrongfully accused of using Boko Haram to try and Islamize Nigeria.

“For years, Muslims in Nigeria have been subjected to unfair scrutiny and suspicion, with many being branded as sympathisers or supporters of the terrorist group.

“However, it now appears that a foreign government has been secretly funding and coordinating Boko Haram’s activities, exposing the blatant hypocrisy and double standards of those who have been quick to blame Nigerian Muslims for the group’s atrocities,” the group said.

It urged the Nigerian National Assembly to immediately launch a thorough investigation into these allegations, adding that it was imperative that “Our lawmakers take these claims seriously and probe the matter to its fullest extent.

“The Nigerian people deserve to know the truth about any potential involvement of foreign agencies in sponsoring terrorism on our soil.

“The allegations made by Congressman Perry are not only a slap in the face to the victims of Boko Haram’s atrocities, but also a betrayal of the trust that Nigeria has placed in the United States as a partner in the fight against terrorism.

Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has threatened to clampdown on property owners, agents and private occupiers in the state, urging them to henceforth desist from illegal recycling and scavenging in unlicensed facilities.

The agency also advised them to halt indiscriminate sorting, dumping, storing and trading of recyclable waste in their facilities and in public spaces around them.

Commenting on a public notice issued by LAWMA to property owners, agents and private occupiers, the managing director and chief executive officer of the agency, Dr Muyiwa Gbadegesin noted that such activities not only degraded the city’s aesthetic appeal but also disrupted the rights of property owners, contributing to serious environmental hazards.

The final public notice read, “LAWMA has observed a rising trend of indiscriminate waste sorting, dumping, and trading of recyclables in unauthorised locations. These activities violate the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law, 2017 and will not be tolerated. Any individual or entity engaging in illegal recycling or scavenging will face strict enforcement measures and penalties as prescribed by law.”

It further cited part III, Section 85 & 86 of the Law, which makes the deposition of recyclable waste in undesignated locations strictly prohibited, adding that LAWMA would take all necessary steps to enforce compliance, including prosecuting violators and shutting down offending facilities.

Commenting further, Gbadegesin said, “We cannot fold our hands and watch few people derail the ongoing efforts to make the environment cleaner and livable for all residents. I also want to add that property owners who permit unauthorised recycling or scavenging activities on their premises risk revocation of property rights and other legal consequences.”

The LAWMA boss urged residents and stakeholders to utilise only licensed recycling facilities and registered waste collectors, to ensure proper waste management in Lagos, encouraging the populace to report illegal activities through LAWMA’s official channels.

“We remain committed to achieving a cleaner and more sustainable Lagos, but we need the cooperation of all residents. We urge everyone to comply with waste management laws of the state and contribute to a healthier environment,” he stressed.

Former governor of Kaduna State, Mukthar Ramalan Yero; former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, and other prominent opposition politicians, have defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the State.

This is as the incumbent State governor, Uba Sani, said the decision of the defectors was due to his inclusive and people-centred policies and programmes in the State.

Addressing APC faithful and supporters at a mega rally held at Murtala Muhammed Square in Kaduna at the weekend, Governor Sani told the defectors that APC was one family.

The governor also assured the 50 political stalwarts that defected to the APC that they would enjoy the same rights and privileges like every other party member.

He said that there was no difference between a party member who joined APC today and the ones that had been in APC 10 years earlier.

Governor Sani told the defectors to notify their supporters of the readiness of APC to accept them into the party as their doors were still open to accept more defectors.

Sani said, “In 2027 election, the electorate will vote for APC in all the elections, from top to bottom. At the top, our leader, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, will be elected. At the state level, the party will be voted for at the gubernatorial, National and State Assembly elections, by the Grace of God.”

The governor promised that projects would be executed in all the nooks and crannies of Kaduna State, irrespective of party affiliations and ethno-religious differences.

Other prominent politicians who defected to APC include Senator Suleiman Hunkuyi, who was the gubernatorial candidate of NNPP in the last elections, and Alhaji Sani Sha’aban, also a former gubernatorial candidate.

Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have busted a trans-border drug trafficking syndicate, arresting four of its members in intelligence-led operations during which multi-million-naira worth of tramadol pills concealed in the bumper and false bottom of sienna buses heading to border towns were recovered.

A statement by the Director, Media & Advocacy, NDLEA Headquarters, Femi Babafemi, on Sunday, said following weeks of intelligence and surveillance operations by operatives of the Directorate of Intelligence in the agency, a Sienna bus marked ABJ 452 HG was intercepted at Nasarawa-Toto Road in Keffi, Nasarawa State on Tuesday, January 27, 2025, at 6am.

“Two suspects: Zahradeen Adamu, 27 and Abubakar Usman, 44, were arrested in the vehicle coming from Onitsha, Anambra state enroute Yola, Adamawa state. A second Sienna bus driven by Abba Usman, 48, was also intercepted.

“During a search of the two vehicles, specially constructed steel compartments were discovered after the removal of the back bumper where a total of 190,960 pills of tramadol were concealed and, in the space, designed to house the spare tyre of the vehicles,” Babafemi stated.

He noted that investigations revealed that an Onitsha, Anambra State-based dealer, Kingsley Mbaeri, was the supplier of the seized tramadol consignment. “A swift follow-up operation led to the arrest of Mbaeri at his Uga Street, Onitsha home on 29th January. Two vehicles: a Toyota Corolla car marked FGG 948 MF and a Toyota Sienna bus marked GWA 23 HH were recovered from his house,” he added.

In another interdiction, operatives of the Intelligence Department intercepted a commercial bus coming from Onitsha, Anambra State at Abaji checkpoint, FCT Abuja on February 4. A passenger in the bus, Chimezie Henry Ojingwa, 32, carrying motor spare parts in a black bag, was arrested. When his bag was searched, 404.47grams of methamphetamine; 506.49grams of Loud, a synthetic strain of cannabis and 262.32grams of dimethyl sulfone, a precursor substance for mixing meth, all of which were concealed in the motor parts, were recovered.

In Cross River state, NDLEA officers on patrol along Ogoja-Abakaliki Road, Yahe, on Thursday February 14 intercepted 170,000 pills of tramadol in a truck driven by Paul Chukwudi, 31, while operatives at the Apapa seaport in Lagos on Tuesday, February 11 recovered 85,400 bottles of codeine-based syrup in a container imported from India.

Two suspects: Halilu Isa and Gambo Umaru were nabbed at Bama road, Maiduguri, Borno state on Friday, February 14 with 60 compressed blocks of skunk, a strain of cannabis, weighing 72kg, while NDLEA operatives in Ekiti state on Tuesday, February 11 raided a notorious drug joint at Iloda street, Ikole-Ekiti where they arrested three suspects:
Bala Muhammed, 57; Yahaya Adamu, 55, and Abdullahi Shehu, 30. A total of 83 kilograms of skunk were recovered from them.

In Lagos, 28-year-old Samiat Olabisi Yussuf was on Saturday, February 15 arrested by operatives during a raid of her Lekki home where 169.5 litres of nitrous oxide popularly known as ‘laughing gas’ and 111grams of Loud were recovered.

Also, not less than 132.84 kilograms of skunk were recovered from two suspects: Ibrahim Usman, 40, and Solomon James, 40, in Taraba Statw. While Usman was nabbed with 88kg of Arizona and Ghana Loud at Wukari, James was arrested with 44.84kg of same substance at Takanaba, Sabongari, in Jalingo LGA of the State.

Meanwhile, across the country, NDLEA Commands continued their War Against Drug Abuse (WADA), sensitisation lectures and advocacy visits to worship centres, schools, workplaces, palaces of traditional rulers and communities all through the past week.

“Instances include: WADA sensitization lecture to students and staff of Government Technical College, Oku, Akwa Ibom; Future Leaders Academy, Kishi, Oyo state; Government Secondary School, Bashire, Sokoto; Ehere Comprehensive School, Ogbor Hill, Abia; Government Day Secondary School, Taura, Jigawa state; and Jesuit College, Agbado Ekiti, Ekiti state; while Kano state command of NDLEA conducted WADA enlightenment lecture for married women in purdah at Markaz Umar Bn Khattab Centre, Kano, among others,” the NDLEA spokesman further said.

El-Rufai is an administrator, scholar, and politician. He is a founding member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and highly regarded for his resourcefulness and brilliance.

To decongest and ensure quick evacuation of cargoes out of the Apapa seaport, APM Terminals Nigeria has announced its commitment to sustain the schedule of the Apapa-Ibadan Standard Gauge.

The sustenance of the schedule will ensure the seamless flow of cargo to and from the Apapa port to the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) Freight Yard at Moniya, Ibadan, Oyo State.

Chief Commercial Officer of APM Terminals Nigeria, Caroline Aubert-Adewuyi, made this known during the launch of the Apapa-Ibadan standard gauge rail service for container transportation.

She said, “The plan for the Apapa-Moniya standard gauge rail service is that it operates like an airport conveyor belt system, receiving exports from the hinterland and evacuating imports from the port efficiently, on a fixed schedule without interruptions.”

Aubert-Adewuyi highlighted past challenges with the rail service, particularly unpredictable scheduling, that made cargo planning difficult for customers.

She said, “With our revamped service, we now offer a reliable and structured schedule, departing three times a week, ensuring efficient cargo movement from Apapa to Ibadan and back. This initiative also provides a cost-effective alternative to road transport, helping to alleviate the persistent traffic congestion in Apapa, which has significantly increased logistics costs.”

She also announced a simplified payment system, where customers will now make payments exclusively to APM Terminals Apapa, which will handle all necessary payments to other stakeholders in the rail service supply chain.

The Chief Finance Officer of APM Terminals Nigeria, Courage Obadagbonyi, emphasised the multi-modal strength of Apapa Port, integrating barge, road, and rail transport for enhanced cargo handling.

“Results from our 2024 fiscal year show a 43% growth in export volumes over the last two years, underscoring the positive impact of our investment in rail logistics,” he stated.

He reaffirmed APM Terminals’ commitment to long-term sustainability, ensuring the continued efficiency of the Apapa-Ibadan rail service.

He said the launch further underscored APM Terminals’ commitment to improving logistics services in Nigeria and active plans to further invest in the Lagos Port Complex.

For his part, NRC Managing Director, Dr. Kayode Opeifa, acknowledged the longstanding collaboration between NRC and APM Terminals in moving container traffic across Nigeria, previously utilising the narrow-gauge line to Kaduna and Kano.

He noted that container transportation on the new standard gauge rail line officially commenced in September 2023, with logistics firms like Bueno Logistics and Transco Africa Logistics among the early adopters.

He also revealed that two additional rail lines are nearing completion at APM Terminals Apapa, bringing the total number of standard gauge lines to three.

The Executive Secretary/CEO of the Nigerian Shippers Council (NSC), Barrister Pius Akuta, praised the collaboration between NRC and APM Terminals, recognising rail transport as the most cost-effective and safest mode for shippers to move goods nationwide.

The new service operates between the Lagos Port Complex in Apapa and the NRC Freight Yard in Moniya, Ibadan, Oyo State, offering a more efficient, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly alternative to road transportation.

•    The cure will ensure that we are protected from the deadly botulism bacteria, especially since this is a relatively low temperature cooking environment.
