Former Anambra State governor and Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, Peter Obi, has categorically denied ever working for the late military ruler, General Sani Abacha, or any government before his entry into politics.

Obi spoke during an interview on Channels TV’s ‘Sunday Politics’ programme in which he addressed long-standing rumours regarding his alleged links to Nigeria’s past military regimes.

Obi stated that his background was rooted entirely in private enterprise and commerce before he ventured into public office, noting that his first-ever government role was as an elected governor of Anambra State.

“I have never worked for any government before I became governor,” Obi said. “I was a very successful businessman. I was part of those controlling trade in Lagos.”

Obi recounted an incident during the Abacha era that may have been misconstrued as a link to military government. According to him, during the mid-1990s, Nigeria’s ports were severely congested due to import restrictions following the international backlash against the Abacha regime. This situation threatened the survival of many legitimate importers.

“When Abacha took over, they blocked the port, and goods were not coming in. We came to Abuja, about 50 of us. We were able to elucidate the problem we were facing,” Obi explained.

He said the meeting with government officials at the time was purely business-driven and resulted from pressure from private stakeholders seeking solutions to the port gridlock. He added that the intervention led to a presidential directive for the finance minister to decongest the ports immediately.

“The president directed the finance minister to decongest all the ports in Nigeria. When they finished after two weeks, they said it’s not the time to probe the ports,” he recalled.

Obi emphasised that the meeting was not an endorsement of the military regime at the time, nor did it constitute working for the government.

“I have never met Abacha, and I don’t know anything about the military,” Peter Obi affirmed.

Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has declared that a single four-year term was enough to lay the foundation for good governance in Nigeria.

Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s political programme, ‘Sunday Politics’, on Sunday night, Obi reiterated his decision to run for president in the 2027 elections and expressed confidence in his ability to turn the country around within a single term of office.

“Four years is just to know what is happening to them—you do not have to solve them overnight,” he said, referring to Nigeria’s complex challenges.

“We know we are driving them. There is nobody that has gotten anywhere he is going in one day, but if you set out to go to Kaduna, people want to see you on the Kaduna road. If we are headed to Lagos, then we are in the wrong direction. What is happening now is that we are telling people we are going this direction, but we are going in another direction.”

Obi insisted that his vision was to immediately set the country on the right path and restore public trust through purposeful leadership and empathy.

“I said it, and I put it in capital—I do not need a day more than four years, and I will show the direction of good governance,” he reiterated.

He also highlighted the level of deterioration Nigeria has faced in just two years under the current administration of President Bola Tinubu, suggesting that a similar timeline was sufficient to reverse the negative trajectory.

“In two years, there has been maximum damage. That shows two years can change it in a good direction,” he said.

He also emphasised the importance of hands-on leadership, pledging to monitor critical sectors in real-time.

“There are things as president that I will have hands-on, reported to me daily or in real time. Number one is the security of lives and property of every Nigerian. Number two is basic education for our children. It is more important for Nigeria to invest in education than oil. The human capital of Nigeria, considering our population, is a huge asset.”

On healthcare, Obi pledged to prioritise primary healthcare and expand insurance coverage.

“I will make sure that I know everything that happens concerning the health of Nigerians, starting from primary healthcare. I will ensure we increase insurance coverage. The rich will pay; the poor will benefit.”

Obi further stated that agriculture and industrial growth will also form part of his governance priorities.

“I will make sure I know in real-time what happens with agricultural products, which will drive the foundation of our manufacturers,” Obi added. “I want to know what power is generated and distributed daily. I want to look at SMEs and manufacturers to ensure that they are properly supported with adequate interest rates.”

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has released the results of the mop-up Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) conducted on Saturday, June 28, 2025.

According to a statement by the Board’s spokesperson, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, on Sunday, out of the 96,838 candidates scheduled to sit for the mop-up exam, only 11,161 were confirmed present and have had their results released.

“Candidates who are not able to access their result have been found not to have fully complied with the instruction to send “UTMERESULT” (as one word text) to 55019/66019 from the same phone number (SIM) with which they registered for the UTME,” Dr. Benjamin said.

Meanwhile, JAMB has also provided an update on its ongoing investigations into a criminal syndicate involved in the production and distribution of fake admission letters.

The scandal, first made public during a joint press conference between the Nigeria Police Force and JAMB on April 13, 2024, revealed that a network of fraudsters had been forging JAMB admission letters for unsuspecting candidates in exchange for money.

Benjamin said with the support of the Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre (NPF-NCCC), five ringleaders of the syndicate were apprehended.

He added that the individuals confessed to fabricating the forged documents and currently facing prosecution at the Federal High Court, Abuja, in the case titled: Inspector General of Police Vs Effa Leonard and four others.

As investigations deepened, JAMB said it flagged a total of 17,417 candidates believed to be beneficiaries of the fake admission letters. “Between 2024 and May 2025, 6,903 of these candidates, who were found to have only minor discrepancies in their admission records, were cleared after following due process.”

However, the remaining 10,514 candidates were referred to the nearest police investigation offices for further scrutiny.

Out of this group, 5,669 candidates were found to have completely procured forged admission letters, while 4,832 candidates were discovered to have sought to bypass the ministerial waiver process by patronizing the illegal syndicate.

JAMB said these individuals were originally part of a batch whose admissions were not properly disclosed to the Board between 2017 and 2020, but were already being processed for official condonement by their respective institutions.

In addition, JAMB announced that 1,532 candidates whose institutions have since processed their undisclosed admissions have also been condoned.

The Board said these candidates had initially attempted to sidestep the official process by engaging the fraudulent syndicate, but were now issued a stern warning even as their cases were regularised.

“Well, you can see what we said, the coalition just adopted a party for 2027,” Obi said. “We’re trying to work together for the progress of Nigeria. Today, I am a Labour Party member, but we have agreed to work together in the coalition, and other people will soon join us.”

He clarified that the coalition was not an anti-party movement against the backdrop of their membership of different political parties, but a strategic alliance that promotes better governance.

While there have been speculations about internal party conflicts and political betrayals, Obi insisted that the coalition’s purpose was for national redemption, not division.

“There is a difference between intention and feelings. I have joined this group. It’s not anti-party; it’s for 2027. We are in 2025; it’s clear. If I say I want to be part of your breakfast, but I can’t leave my dinner,” he explained.

“People just assume anything. I am part of the coalition that will produce a competent president with the compassion to save this country.”

When asked about the type of leaders the coalition was willing to work with, especially from parties like the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Obi stressed the importance of both change and experience. Drawing on biblical imagery, he referenced Apostle Paul as a symbol of transformation and argued that former officeholders from the ruling APC can still contribute if they have truly learned from the past.

“When a leader comes into the seat, you change everybody—you change the old and the young, just like Paul in the Bible who persecuted Christ and changed later,” he said.

“For those who have been in government before, their experience is critical because they know what went wrong, what failed the system, and what would sail the system.”

“We have an incompetent government. As president, I’ll bring civility in governance. I’ll respect the constitution. I will appoint competent persons,” he declared.

“I won’t be the minister of petroleum. Every ministry will have a competent minister who has compassion to rule that ministry.”

Obi outlined his policy priorities in a practical and data-driven way, saying he would demand regular reporting from all ministries and focus first on security and education. He said human capital development would be the bedrock of his presidency.

“I’ll have people reporting at every time, number one is security, number two is education. The human capital in Nigeria is a huge investment,” he noted.

“I’d make sure the healthcare system goes down to primary healthcare. I’d know what’s happening with agricultural production. I’d want to know the amount of power generated in a day.”

Obi dismissed the notion that Nigeria’s problems required an entire presidential term to fix. Drawing a contrast with the current Tinubu administration’s pace, he insisted that significant improvements can be made within two years, provided there is vision, sacrifice, and competent leadership.

Nigerian international Ola Aina has committed his future to Nottingham Forest by signing a new three-year contract until 2028.

If it doesn’t look FRESH or smell FRESH or feel FRESH, it probably isn’t, and it will make your finished product taste bad.

Use fresh fish.
Smoking will not hide old fish. The quality will be reflected.

Catfish harvest is categorize into two namely; melange (unit weight between 300g-600g) and table size (600g-above),the price/kg of melange is sold for N600 and above N800 and above for table size as at today.

The pocket size of your target audience will determine the type in terms of size of fish to smoke.

After harvesting (as a farmer) or purchasing (as a non farmer) your fresh catfish, put them in a container and add a reasonable amount of cooking salt and cover the container with a lid and place a heavy object on the lid to prevent the fish from getting out of the container.

Leave for about 30 minutes after which all the fish must have been dead then you can start the steps mentioned above.
CLEANING

•     clean fish, removing the gills and intestine.

•     Wash in clean water.

BRINE AND CURE

what is brine?  Basically, brine is salt and water.

Soaking the fish in brine will achieve a few things:

•    It will firm up the flesh to be less mushy.

•    It will draw out any old blood, which will improve the taste.

•    It will add some saltiness to the fish in the right amounts; this is desired.

•    It will add some additional flavoring to the fish.

•    The cure will ensure that we are protected from the deadly botulism bacteria, especially since this is a relatively low temperature cooking environment.

(Brine recipe • 1/2 gallon good clean spring water • 3/4 cup kosher salt (or plain salt, but not iodized salt)

SMOKING AND DRYING
•     Prepare smoker.  Too much smoke will cause the fish to taste bitter. Use just enough wood to maintain a steady smoke. There are various kinds of oven. We shall discuss that in another article.
