Super Eagles coach, Eric Chelle, has named his starting lineup for the Sunday night game against DR Congo in the final of the 2026 World Cup qualifying play-offs, dropping striker, Akor Adams, to the bench.

Akor of Sevilla scored the first goal in Nigeria’s victory in the first play-off with the Panthers of Gabon on Thursday, a match the Super Eagles won 4-1.

However, defender Semi Ajayi, who did not play in the semi-final match against Gabon, is back in the starting team, while Frank Onyeka is also part of the first 11.

Ajayi was sidelined for the previous match following an accumulation of yellow cards. He will partner with Fulham’s Calvin Bassey in the heart of Nigeria’s defence this Sunday.

Zaidu Sanusi will man the left flank of the Super Eagles’ defence, while fast-rising star Benjamin Frederick takes the right back position.

In midfield, Alex Iwobi of Fulham will pull the strings. The former Arsenal man is supported by Wilfred Ndidi and Onyeka, who came in from the bench in the last game.

As expected, Galatasaray striker Victor Osimhen spearheads Nigeria’s attack. Reigning African Player of the Year, Ademola Lookman, and Samuel Chukwueze will run the flanks.

The match between Nigeria and DR Congo is a fight for a place in the next intercontinental play-offs. It is a winner-take-all game with the victor going on to represent Africa in the play-offs next March.

In Nigeria, every year, thousands of babies arrive before their bodies are ready, struggling to breathe, feed, and stay warm, while their tiny immune systems fight off infections.

In a country where access to specialised newborn care is limited, these challenges can quickly become life-threatening. Experts, however, said many of these struggles could be prevented through proper maternal care even before labour begins.

Professor Iretiola Fajolu, a neonatologist and professor of pediatrics at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), explained on Health Matters, a programme on Channels Television, that early and consistent antenatal care is the first line of defence against preterm birth and its complications

“Many complications that preterm babies face can be avoided if mothers start antenatal care on time,” she said.

She highlighted several factors that increase the likelihood of preterm birth, including untreated infections, high blood pressure, diabetes, multiple pregnancies, and short birth intervals.

According to her, early antenatal visits allow healthcare providers to detect these risks while there is still time to intervene. “A woman may feel well, but only proper antenatal checks can reveal conditions that put both mother and baby at risk,” Fajolu said.

She also pointed out that lifestyle factors such as alcohol consumption and smoking can increase the risk of premature delivery.

One of the most devastating complications of prematurity is Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP), a condition that can lead to irreversible blindness. Fajolu described ROP as an emerging but preventable threat in Nigeria.

ROP occurs when abnormal blood vessels grow in the retina of the eye, a problem most common in extremely preterm infants. If not detected early, it can cause permanent vision loss.

“The smaller the baby, the higher the risk,” she explained. She emphasised that babies born before 32 weeks or weighing less than 1.5 kilograms should be screened for ROP within the first few weeks of life.

“Screening is simple, affordable, and saves children from a lifetime of darkness,” she said.

Beyond the medical risks attached to preterm birth, the emotional toll on families can be overwhelming. Parents often find themselves navigating fear, uncertainty, and long hospital stays.

According to Fajolu, these fragile newborns require a combination of advanced medical interventions and simple, lifesaving practices that can be applied even in resource-limited settings.

One such intervention is the use of prenatal steroids, which are administered to mothers at risk of early labour. These steroids help the baby’s lungs mature faster, reducing the chances of breathing difficulties, a major cause of death among preterm infants.

“A single course of antenatal steroids significantly improves a preterm baby’s chance of survival,” Fajolu stated.

She also highlighted Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC), a low-cost but highly effective method that involves holding the baby skin-to-skin on the parent’s chest. This approach stabilises the baby’s temperature, improves breastfeeding, and enhances bonding.

“We have a study done by WHO that has shown that immediate kangaroo mother care is even better than having to start kangaroo mother care later,” she said.

Fajolu emphasised that delaying or starting antenatal care late can be risky. Without early monitoring, conditions such as high blood pressure or pre-eclampsia may go unnoticed increasing the likelihood of preterm birth.

She urged government, healthcare providers, and communities to intensify awareness campaigns so that expectant mothers understand the importance of booking early for antenatal care, ideally within the first trimester.

The Lagos State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Lawal Pedro, SAN, has dismissed claims that Nollywood actor Olanrewaju James, popularly known as Baba Ijesha, was cleared and freed by the Court of Appeal, describing the reports as “false, misleading and irresponsible.”

Pedro, who spoke to journalists in Lagos on Sunday, said his office was disturbed by a social media post by fellow actor Yomi Fabiyi alleging that Baba Ijesha had been exonerated of all charges, including the sexual offences involving a minor.

The Attorney-General warned that the claims were a “complete distortion of the judicial record and capable of misleading the public.”

He said the clarification became necessary after Fabiyi asserted that the Court of Appeal had “cleared” the convict of ever defiling a minor and dismissed the entire case as a “charade.”

Pedro outlined the case history, recalling that the High Court of Lagos State on July 14, 2022, convicted Baba Ijesha of sexual assault and indecent treatment of a child over incidents recorded in 2021, sentencing him to five and three years respectively, to run concurrently.

He added that the Court of Appeal, Lagos Division, on June 28, 2024, delivered judgement on the actor’s appeal. “While the court set aside convictions relating to alleged offences from 2013–2014, it upheld the conviction and sentence for the 2021 sexual assault charges,” he said.

Pedro noted that Baba Ijesha later pursued an appeal to the Supreme Court, but it was struck out for incompetence on May 29, 2025. A subsequent motion seeking leave to file a fresh appeal was also dismissed on October 9, 2025, leaving the Court of Appeal judgement intact.

He stressed that the actor’s release resulted solely from completing his full term of imprisonment as affirmed by the appellate court—not from any discharge or acquittal.

“Mr. Olanrewaju James was not cleared of the offences of sexual assault and indecent treatment of a child,” Pedro said, warning that Fabiyi’s claims were untrue and capable of causing public alarm.

The Attorney-General urged Lagos residents to disregard the misleading reports and cautioned Fabiyi and media platforms amplifying the misinformation to desist. He added that the Office of the Attorney-General “will not hesitate to initiate criminal proceedings for publication of false news with intent to cause fear or alarm, an offence under Section 39 of the Lagos Criminal Law.”

Nigeria’s dream of reaching the 2026 World Cup suffered a cruel blow as DR Congo edged the Super Eagles in a dramatic penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw in Rabat on. Sunday night.

Frank Onyeka had given Nigeria the perfect start with an early goal in the third minute, only for Meschak Elia to level for DR Congo in the 32nd minute.

Despite several near-misses in extra time, neither side could find a winner, forcing the tie into penalties.

The shootout proved a nightmare for the Super Eagles. Calvin Bassey missed the opening spot-kick, and Semi Ajayi saw his penalty saved, while Simon also failed to convert. DR Congo held their nerve to secure victory, sending them through to the intercontinental playoff and ending Nigeria’s campaign in heartbreaking fashion.

It was a night of missed opportunities for Nigeria, who struggled to adapt without Victor Osimhen after he was forced off early in the second half due to injury.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that a total of 2,316,232 new voters have been registered across the country in the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise.

The update, released on Sunday, showed significant variation across states, with Osun State topping the chart with 185,089 completed registrations, followed by Imo State (143,386) and Kano State (132,290). Sokoto State also recorded a strong turnout with 123,320 new registrants.

INEC explained that the new figures represented “completed online and physical registration for Week 12” of the CVR exercise, which began on August 18, 2025, and is scheduled to end in August 2026.

In its statement, the Commission said the publication of figures was part of its ongoing commitment to transparency in the voter registration process.

“This update is part of our effort to maintain transparency in the continuous voter registration process. The figures represent completed online and physical registration for Week 12,” INEC stated.

The electoral body, however, noted that voter registration remained suspended in Anambra State until after the state’s governorship election on November 8, 2025.

“Registration is suspended in Anambra State until after the governorship election on 8th November 2025 in line with Section 9(6) of the Electoral Act 2022,” the Commission clarified.

The latest breakdown showed Lagos and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) following closely behind the top four with 109,693 and 106,855 registrations respectively, while Borno recorded 106,376.

Other high-performing states include Kogi (91,573), Jigawa (88,209), Zamfara (84,268), and Katsina (80,425). In the South-West, Ogun recorded 71,091, Oyo 64,561, and Ondo 16,012.

States in the middle range include Kaduna (78,282), Kebbi (74,159), Delta (72,311), Niger (69,739), and Akwa Ibom (65,446).

At the lower end of the table, Taraba (17,803), Enugu (16,304), Cross River (14,559), and Abia (12,297) posted the smallest numbers so far.

Analysts note that while the South-West continues to dominate the registration charts, northern states are recording growing participation, driven by local mobilisation efforts.

INEC acknowledged this trend, citing the role of local actors in boosting awareness.

“Community-based organisations, religious leaders, and local officials in several northern states have been actively promoting voter awareness and encouraging eligible residents to register,” the Commission observed.

The CVR exercise, which allows eligible Nigerians to register, transfer polling units, or update their personal information, is expected to continue until mid-2026, ahead of the next general election cycle.

The Vice President, Senator Kashim Shettima, has described the passing of Hajiya Sutura Shehu Shagari, the last surviving wife of late former President Shehu Shagari as a huge loss to Nigeria, saying she will be remembered for her life of compassionate and selfless service to her community and the nation at large.

Senator Shettima spoke on Sunday when he led the Federal Government delegation to condole with the Shagari family over the demise of the matriarch of the Shagari family in their residence in Sokoto State.

Announcing the death of the last surviving wife of the former President, a statement signed by the eldest son of the former President and Sarkin Mafaran Shagari, Capt. Bala Shagari, had noted that the late Hajiya Sutura died at about 3pm on Monday, November 10, 2025, after a prolonged illness at the age of 79.

Commiserating with the Shagari family in Sokoto, the Vice President who said he was in the state at the instance of President Bola Tinubu prayed for the repose of Hajiya Sutura’s soul, as well as comfort for the family and the Sultanate.

“We are here at the instance of His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to condole with the government and people of Sokoto State, His Eminence, the Sultan of Sokoto and the immediate family of our late President, Alhaji Shehu Usman Aliyu Shagari, over the sad event of the passing of his last surviving wife, Hajia Sutura Aliyu Usman Shagari,” he stated in a statement by his spokesman, Stanley Nkwocha, on Sunday.

Vice President Shettima also prayed Almighty Allah to reward the departed with Aljannah Firdaus, as well as the fortitude for the immediate family, Sokoto State and the entire nation to bear the loss.

“May Allah grant her soul eternal rest and reward her with Aljana Firdaus. May Allah also grant the family and the good people of Sokoto and the nation as a whole, the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss,” he prayed.

Leave for about 30 minutes after which all the fish must have been dead then you can start the steps mentioned above.
CLEANING

•     clean fish, removing the gills and intestine.

•     Wash in clean water.

BRINE AND CURE

what is brine?  Basically, brine is salt and water.

Soaking the fish in brine will achieve a few things:

•    It will firm up the flesh to be less mushy.

•    It will draw out any old blood, which will improve the taste.

•    It will add some saltiness to the fish in the right amounts; this is desired.

•    It will add some additional flavoring to the fish.

•    The cure will ensure that we are protected from the deadly botulism bacteria, especially since this is a relatively low temperature cooking environment.

(Brine recipe • 1/2 gallon good clean spring water • 3/4 cup kosher salt (or plain salt, but not iodized salt)

SMOKING AND DRYING
•     Prepare smoker.  Too much smoke will cause the fish to taste bitter. Use just enough wood to maintain a steady smoke. There are various kinds of oven. We shall discuss that in another article.
